INSPIRATION - In 2014, Praline was our first deviation from the world of farmhouse-style beers. It was created as a (we thought once-off) new beer for the GABS beer festival. With our existing beers inspired by Belgian traditions, we wondered what other Belgian excellence we could express in a beer. The thought came to bringing together our two favourite Belgian creations – chocolate and beer. Inspired by a classic hazelnut praline, it was one of the original dessert stouts on the Australian beer scene.

Its raw and very real ingredients made Praline a challenging beer to make. We created it on the assumption that this was a one-off brew for the festival, and once it left the brewery, that would be it! The hard work really paid off and Praline was an instant hit, taking out the People’s Choice award at the festival. In amongst the excitement of the win, we realised this probably wouldn’t be a once-off beer after all.

The black sheep of our line-up, Praline remains a cult-favourite beer for many, and continues to constantly win over new fans year-round.

Methode -  Praline is as a celebration of its quality raw ingredients. The seven speciality grains provide a dark, roasty canvas for this intensely dark stout. We use real toasted cacao nibs, which give a dark chocolate character you can’t create with any sort of processed chocolate product. Real hazelnuts bring a subtle, nutty edge and some texture, and finally we use real vanilla along with lactose for smoothness, creaminess and that dessert-like character.

TASTE - Pouring a deep brown – almost black – aromas of roasted coffee and dark chocolate with an undertone of earthiness greet the nose. Rich dark chocolate flavours dance across the palate, with a touch of tart berry character alongside subtle nuttiness. Surprisingly bright against the rich malty base, with a creamy texture and deceptively dry finish.

Pair with tart berries, creamy gorgonzola, chargrilled steak, or poured over vanilla ice-cream!
